PT: Judgement Day

Movie lover from Victoria, BC.

RIP Adam Yauch

Adam Yauch aka “MCA” of the Beastie Boys was taken from us yesterday. The news of his passing hit me hard. Only 2 celebrity deaths before him have brought me to tears: Tupac Shakur and Michael Jackson. Adam Yauch’s death makes that number 3.

The other day I was listening to their latest album “Hot Sauce Committee Part Two.” I thought, “I hope MCA is getting well enough to go back on tour soon.”

I was fortunate to see the Beastie Boys perform live. When I think of “greatest show ever” that show always comes to mind. The chemistry between MCA, Ad-Rock and Mike D was unmatched. Their crowd interaction was outstanding. I’ll remember that show forever.

I grew up listening to The Beastie Boys, it was a joy watching them constantly adapt and mature. In their early days they were punks, heck they started out as a punk rock group! My parents told me to always respect all people, especially women. The following lyrics always struck close to home:

I Want To Say a Little Something That’s Long Overdue
The Disrespect To Women Has Got To Be Through
To All The Mothers And Sisters And the Wives And Friends
I Want To Offer My Love And Respect To The End

These are the lyrics I thought of the instant I read the tweet from TMZ:

I’m gonna die gonna die one day
Cause I’m goin and goin and goin this way
Not like a roach or a piece of toast
I’m going out first class not going out coach

I love to dream that MCA and Tupac are collaborating at this moment while MJ dances/beatboxes for them. Maybe Biggie is coaching them. Nerdy/far-fetched thoughts I know, still fun to think about it. You’ll live forever through your music Mr. Yauch. Thank you for the memories.

CASFF

Christina, Adrian, Sarah Film Fest!

Last week my niece came to visit. She loves movies just as much as me, what a dangerous combo! Equipped with a new movie buddy we caught a bunch of movies. In between movies we walked a lot, I was quite exhausted by the time Sunday rolled around!

Wednesday April 25, 2012

Safe: This was a promo screening made possible by Alliance Films, The Q Dot FM, The Zone and Monday Magazine. Just moments before the film was scheduled to start we were told Alliance did not provide Silver City with a security key for our screening. The theatre manager offered us free passes to come back and watch Safe later in the week as well as stay for a screening of The Hunger Games. I’ve seen THG 4 times and loathed the idea of watching it again. After a bunch of commotion, we were told Alliance sent the key and 5 minutes later we were watching Safe! I was lukewarm on the movie, my family loved it however.

Friday April 27, 2012

Titanic 3D: Going in I was nervous about seeing a classic converted to 3D but I was pleasantly surprised! Titanic looked outstanding in 3D and it was a great joy to see it on the big screen one more time. Christina wanted to see Titanic just one week after watching with my parents. She made fun of me for crying during one or two sad scenes. It was those dang allergies I’m telling you!

The Breakfast Club: I’m not sure how we stumbled upon TBC on Netflix but we had a great time watching it! It was especially fun listening to Christina react to the unique characters.

The Pirates! Band of Misfits 3D: Brought to us by Aardman Animations (Famous for the Wallace and Gromit films). This movie is laced with over the top and subtle humor. There were several hearty laughs from the three of us. I’m a little disappointed there was a total of 6 people at the late screening on opening night. I recommend this movie to all! Very funny, some heartwarming moments, just a great time at the movies.

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Yes I have this on blu-ray, specifically for when Christina visits. What a brat!

The Notebook: Christina hasn’t seen The Notebook. We watched this in two parts, late at night and first thing in the morning. She enjoyed it, I somewhat enjoy The Notebook. If only it wasn’t so damn manipulative.

Saturday April 28, 2012

Chimpanzee: This movie suffers from far too much narration. I wish Disney Nature trusted the audience to watch and understand some of the stuff on-screen, instead we’re beaten over the head with non-stop commentary from Tim Allen. The material becomes repetitive after 1 hour. The footage is quite outstanding however. I suggest a rental when it’s available on demand.

Bully: It was important for us to watch this documentary on the elephant in the room, bullying in/out of classrooms. It was heart-breaking to see and hear the stories of children getting bullied. It was sickening to see the lack of concern from the people in the school system who should care. We had a nice talk after the movie about bullying and the importance to avoid these situations and never hesitate to ask for help.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Diary of A Wimpy Kid Rodrick Rules: On the topic of bullying we ran into this funny movie on Netflix. We caught a preview for the third movie during our adventures, can’t remember which day. So we decided to catch the first two on Netflix.

Final tally, 10 movies in the first annual CASFF! What a crazy time! We also watched random episodes of iCarly. Some of the episodes were quite funny, but I refuse to watch unless Christina throws ‘em on. Overall we had a great time. Big thanks to Christina and Sarah for participating!

Safe

Rating - 2.5/5

Safe is exactly the movie you sign up for. Jason Statham snaps many limbs, shoots many bad guys, gets in a car chase and delivers some funny one liners in his trademark British accent. If this is what you crave, stop reading and check it out. If you wish to hear about my concerns, stay tuned!

Missing from Safe is a memorable villain. The best action movies have a memorable villain: Terminator 2, The Matrix, Predator, Die Hard and more recently The Raid: Redemption. The henchmen/villains in this movie serve only to have their limbs broken and faces shot.

The movie stumbles out of the gate. The build-up does not balance the rest of the movie. If I’m signing up for a Statham movie I want pedal to the metal action right from the get-go. I appreciate the effort with the plot build-up/background, but it all goes out the window halfway through the movie.

Once the action gets going it’s quite fun watching Statham dispatch countless bad guys. There is one action scene in particular which had my jaw on the floor because of the way it was shot. (You will know it when you see it) The action is too much at times because the henchmen die as quickly as they appear on-screen. I enjoy being treated to SOME form of resistance: fisticuffs, shootouts, stand-offs and at least one or two guys who present any form of danger to our hero.

The movie suffers from far too many tight, shaky cam shots. Much of the action is missed because the audience couldn’t see what happened. The action is shot much like Warrior, a film I despised because the cinematography was atrocious.

If you’re a Statham fan, Safe delivers what you need. If you’re an action fan, you may want to wait for a rental. The rest of you? I think it’s “safe” to say you won’t enjoy this movie!

Digital Video Store

Last week I bid farewell to video stores. It stung a little but what can I do? Adapt! I have access to VOD (Video on Demand) through the following devices: Xbox 360, PS3, Shaw Cable, PC, iPad and now Apple TV (purchased a few days ago).

I rented Merantau (HD) via Xbox Live Marketplace to the tune of 490 Microsoft Points ($8). The video quality was exceptional. I would say somewhere between DVD and Blu-Ray quality. I didn’t have to leave the comfort of my living room, heck I didn’t even have to get dressed! It was a fun viewing experience and I can’t say I missed the task of leaving my place to rent a movie. Good start!

A few days ago I purchased Apple TV thanks to a twitter conversation with @IamKent I encourage you to check out his site for reviews and podcast. http://www.the72pins.com Apple TV took just moments to setup, within 5 minutes I was browsing iTunes movies on my TV. Welcome to the new video store!

I browsed the “Advance Screening” section of iTunes. This section is described as “Pre-Theatrical Releases, Movies Currently in Theatres and Digital Exclusives.” My fiancee and me love a good horror film. With the help of friends @donholio and @jasonwhyte we chose Kill List (HD) for $7.99. The HD version of Kill List is comparable to blu-ray quality in terms of picture quality. It was a fantastic film and how about that convenience! We rented the movie at approximately 11pm.

Through Apple TV I have watched TV Shows/Movies on Netflix, streamed digital copies from my iTunes library on my PC, and as I write I’m listening to the radio via Apple TV. Between iTunes, Xbox Marketplace and Netflix I appreciate my movie selection. I welcome the era of the Digital Video Store and the disappearance of the video store. Video stores will always have a special place in my heart, thank you for paving the way.

R.I.P. Video Stores

Video stores are on the brink of extinction. According to Red Flag Deals, Rogers Plus will cease renting movies. Remaining stores will shut down completely or convert to a wireless store only. Link: http://goo.gl/Sbhgc

I enjoyed renting from a local Rogers Plus on a regular basis. I enjoyed conversing with staff while browsing movies and completing a rental transaction. In my early days store staff helped me discover great titles such as: Mallrats, Reservoir Dogs, and Evil Dead 2. Yes we have access to movie recommendations from countless online friends/critics, it’s not the same.

I’m going to miss the deals at a video store which seem to be absent in the online world. If I say to you “7/7/7” some of you may remember this AMAZING deal, “7 movies, 7 days, 7 bucks.” Good luck finding that via iTunes! Another deal I’ll miss, “Previously viewed DVDs/Blu-Rays.” Can I buy a discounted “previously viewed” on demand title??

Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate VOD (Video on Demand) services such as iTunes and Shaw Cable. VOD allows smaller movies to reach a wider audience. There are benefits to VOD: no late fees, no travel, open 24 hours, wide selection and it’s fast!

This morning I rented “Merantau” from Xbox Marketplace. I didn’t have to put on my shoes, hop on a bus, pick from a shelf, pay and return. I logged in to my Xbox, click “Rent” and boom the movie started. The picture quality is surprisingly great too. My only complaint is Dolby Digital only for VOD. I realize uncompressed audio would add a hefty amount to the 8gb download, but it’s nice to dream.

There are few video stores left and I’m sad to see them go. I’m sad to see people get replaced with VOD and redbox kiosks. I hope all affected employees find jobs elsewhere and flourish. Pictured below is your new “store employee.”

As always I will access what is available to me. Here I come iTunes, Xbox Marketplace, Netflix and Shaw Cable. I hope you have all the titles I want!

Video stores are nearly extinct. Where do you go for rentals? What will you miss the most about video stores?

Here are your answers:

@Chris_Withers: this could end up being a renaissance for indie video stores. there are tons of places to get new releases. It’s back catalogue that’s the issue. i think iTunes is good.

@noahphex: Netflix, On Demand, Vudu, Redbox - I won’t miss them at all frankly. I hate having to leave my house to do anything. If I could have everything delivered I would so it’s not a loss for me.

@DominosQuadra: I’ve been just buying movies for years, instead of renting.

@PulpTruth94:  I go to @FamilyVideo They’re still alive and kicking. Discussing films with the workers, recommending films to renters, and physically holding a disc in my hand. Love that human interaction.

@BTSjunkie: A lot of the marathons I attend wouldn’t be possible w/ out video stores. Too hard to find movies across 10 diff services.

@Salsalito: the good local one (back before I moved out here have not found one here) that makes recommendations. You could build a face to face relationship at a store. At a minimum understand weather you had the same tastes.

@HernandezGanas: What about the hugely successful Pic a Flic on Cook?

@lacouvee: we get most of our films on DVD at the @gvp - Blu Ray too! Great selection. Up to date reasonably. I have to say - have greatly reduced rentals and Shaw on demand. Fantastic service!

@rainbow_goddess: I don’t rent videos. I don’t have a credit card and no one, store or online, will rent to me without one.

@soundjam69: Crazy Mikes on shelbourne and cedar hill xroad or pic a flic in cook street village

@j_ceperley: Used to split my rentals between the 1 Blockbuster in town and the Rogers near my house - sadly both are gone now:(

@donholio: I have been doing a lot of VOD lately. Also lots of purchases of BR. I haven’t rented from store in 3+ years. Won’t miss em. Even more so when you have kids. Tough to leave the house even when they are asleep. I can put on a video and pause if needed

@gianniguessguy:  they always had really big, usually rare candy. Sometimes I would just go get that and not rent a movie…..#willmissthat my old store always had candy and sodas from the UK because the owners were from there! SUPER awesome!

Erik: I was a video store employee and I am sad that video stores are almost gone. Some still hang on because they did it right all along, basically becoming libraries of our films, like Pic-A-Flic. The last ‘rental’ I made was from the library which has done very well in the face of this fading media. However, I don’t rent because I am savvy enough to not have to. If I have to see I movie at home because I missed it in theaters, well, I get a hold of it somehow. Nuff said.

Teg: Yo! Video is the shit. They carry a lot of really great foreign/horror/indie films, and have for years. I always liked it because the clerks always had really great ideas about what to watch and would tailor their suggestions based on what you felt like watching. The internet is great but it’s hard to find the good shit, especially if like me, you like watching films that are bit off the beaten track so to speak.

Ryan: Also Pic-a-Flic in Cook St. Village, still an amazing place to rent from (possibly a better selection than Yo!, but both are amazing stores).

Thank you to everyone for participating in my poll. Feel free to add comments in the section below if you missed your chance to chime in.

Contest winner announcement

Thanks to all who participated in my first contest for my blog. For those that missed it, I offered 2 General Admission+1 popcorn+2 Drinks to a loyal follower on twitter. A skill-testing question was necessary to qualify. And the winner was… @shankeithv!

The question? “What was my 2nd favorite film of 2011?” Answer: Martha Marcy May Marlene.

I will be doing more of these moving forward. Why? I want to encourage more people to get out and go to a movie. If they have to do it on my dime, so be it! :) This is my way of thanking you for following me through my numerous movie tweets and blog posts.

What did @shankeithv see? 21 Jump Street Here are his thoughts:

@shankeithv: everyone hyped it up for me, good movie, but not as funny as I thought itd be, started of hilarious, jonah did his thing

@shankeithv: jonahs humor is always great, but kind of got less funny near the end, but still good

@shankeithv: to be honest, it might have been funnier with a bigger audience

This raises an excellent point, is a comedy better with a large audience? I saw 21 Jump Street with a large audience and everyone had a blast. It certainly helped me lower my guard and have a good hard laugh throughout the movie.

Next time I will explore ways to offer my contest to more of you (Excluded provinces, the entire USA). If you know of any methods for me to deliver you two general admission tickets in the USA, let me know!
